Project: Hilton Hotel, Addis Ababa

Description: Comprehensive hotel refurbishment

Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Client: Hilton Hotels Worldwide

Architect: Hilton

Year: 2009

Scheme design of the complete refurbishment of the M&E services of this 40-year old 400 key hotel in Ethiopia’s capital in a challenging very high altitude climate.

Located in the heart of the city and walking distance to the ANC headquarters, the hotel enjoys year round 95% plus occupancy levels.  Built 40 years ago, the hotel MEP required complete renewal. The challenge was to develop a plant and system replacement strategy, that enabled the hotel to continue to trade.

During concept and scheme design, several options for phasing were developed, lead in the main by the MEP systems. Central to the philosophy was to create temporary plant MEP compounds, to allow for the decommissioning of the existing systems and the installation of the new, whilst maintaining availability of all MEP systems to the occupied areas of the hotel during each phase.
