Black & White Engineering were responsible for the MEP design of the new record breaking attraction at Dubai Festival City, ‘IMAGINE’.
The show delivers a unique sensory experience, utilising light, water and fire, combined with giant projection screens, 30 fountains and surround sound.
Boasting the largest water screen projection in the world – a Guinness World Record breaker, it features the latest entertainment technology in water, pyrotechnics, lasers, lights and dramatic effects.
We developed the design in accordance with the requirements of Laser Vision Mega Media, providing services to land based and water based equipment.
The land based design consisted of services to 22 media blades which form an integral part of the shows operation, alongside the control and projector rooms located on the roof of the mall.
The water based assets are operated via generators installed in a compound adjacent the mall.
Meeting the demands of laser vision was a challenge and something which we have successfully achieved.
The attraction opened during the festive period 2016 and continues to be a success.
Dubai Festival City Mall is a landmark 2m sq. ft. urban retail development which is located at the centre of Dubai Festival City – now acknowledged to be one of the UAE’s most exciting retail, dining and leisure attractions.
Set on the historic Dubai Creek, Dubai Festival City Mall has undertaken a radical transformation that now offers over 400 world class retailers, 75 restaurants – many of which feature waterfront dining and excellent views of the mall’s new attraction ‘IMAGINE’.
Designing and supervising the MEP services for a significant expansion and interfacing with a large existing building which had to remain operational during the construction works has provided an exciting proposition for the team to demonstrate Black & White’s capabilities.
The multidiscipline team has provided site services for the duration of the project which is currently going through the final stages of completion. The continuity from the design office to the site enabled smooth transition, with a detailed appreciation of the project allowing carefully considered approaches and informed decisions when considering changes to the scope and additional work packages.
As to be expected the project has presented many challenges, such as the development of a strategy to maintain all the MEP and FLS services currently in use, ensuring no interruption to the day to day operation of the mall whilst it underwent the ambitious two phase expansion programme. The team has also had to manage simultaneous authority submissions, inspections and approvals to ensure programme was maintained, such as the opening of large landlord attractions and the trading requirements of key tenancies.
The project is due to be handed over at the end of the first quarter of 2017 and will be a further demonstration of Black & White’s successful design and management of retail developments.
B&W are proud to announce this achievement which reaffirms our continued commitment to a long-term and structured BIM implementation strategy across the business, embracing industry recognised benchmarks.
As one of only a handful of other MEP Consultants in the UK to achieve certification through a recognised accreditation body, Level 2 certification strengthens the creditability of our BIM data management competencies which puts us in a strong position to successfully enhance bid submissions in support of our design team partners.
The UK government’s much publicised BIM Level 2 mandate took effect on the 4 April 2016. Achieving certification also acknowledges our ability to respond to the mandated requirement by demonstrating our internal management systems (QSE) are fully aligned to deliver the requirements within the standards of PAS1192-2:2013 and PAS 91:2013 section 4.2.
We are particularly proud of the effort that has gone into this achievement which has been accomplished in conjunction with a comprehensive overhaul of our legacy QSE system. The fundamental principles and objectives of BIM processes are synonymous with B&W’s ethos and our QSE system now fully integrates BIM into our core processes.
The independent certification scheme by UKAS accredited certification body Ocean Certification was perfectly aligned to our business needs, allowing our new QSE system to achieve UKAS accredited certification to ISO 9001 as part of the same process.

UK offices are now strategically placed to provide high quality, local support throughout the UK and further establish our unique business model within the UK market with the aid of the global design hub in Manila. Clients will receive the highest level of service with Black & White’s senior sector leaders providing support on all UK projects. In addition, the company is actively recruiting to add to our highly qualified global team of MEP engineering experts.
We are delighted to announce that Josh Thompson has completed his engineering apprenticeship, achieving the following qualifications in the process:
• EAL Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Technical Support
• Performing Engineering Operations Level 3
• Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Engineering Manufacture
• Level 3 in General Engineering, achieved in DD
Josh started his apprenticeship at the Rolls-Royce Training Centre in September 2012, learning various aspects of engineering which provided an excellent foundation for him to enter the industry. These areas of engineering included Manual Turning, CNC Programming, Fitting, Electrical & Computer Aided Design.
Out of all the various elements of engineering, Josh enjoyed design the most and decided to pursue a career in MEP consultancy. Since joining Black and White Engineering, Josh has worked on a number of high profile international projects, increasing his design experience and also his knowledge and competency in a number of software packages such as Revit, AutoCAD, IES, Dialux and Amtech.
As part of our ongoing commitment to staff training and development, Josh has already commenced the next stage of his career and completed the first year of a foundation degree in Building Services Engineering. Upon completion he hopes to join the degree course at Northumbria University.
Congratulations to Chris Nisbet from our mechanical engineering team in our Newcastle office, on achieving Autodesk® Revit® MEP:2015 Certified Professional Status.
As the 10th person in the UK to achieve this, Chris joins his colleague Karl in a very elite community of individuals who share this mark of distinction.
This bolster’s B&W’s BIM capability achieving certified professionals from both the electrical and mechanical disciplines and completes a key milestone within B&W’s long term BIM implementation strategy which looks to demonstrate all aspects of our BIM capability through certified measures.
Both Karl and Chris play key roles in B&W’s global Revit Training Programme and their certification provides the benchmark aptitude to be delivered to all of our technical staff. We are extremely proud of their achievements and also to have two of the first 10 people in the UK to earn this distinction within our engineering team.
Congratulations to Karl Snowball, from our Newcastle office, on achieving Autodesk® Revit® MEP:2015 Certified Professional Status.
Karl has joined a very elite community of electrical engineering professionals with just 7 people in the UK achieving this mark of distinction.
The Autodesk Certified professional (ACP) programme is the most recognised measure of Revit ability throughout the industry. The recent introduction of RevitMEP onto the ACP is considered by many in the industry to be the most onerous assessment. The exam assesses professional users’ advanced knowledge of the tools, features, and common tasks of Autodesk Revit MEP 2015. By earning this designation Karl has demonstrated advanced knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and plumbing modelling.
Black & White provides clients with innovative, forward thinking, best practice MEP designs and we seek out the best engineering talent available, supporting them in their ongoing education, so that we can do this. We remain committed to being at the forefront of engineering developments and technology that allow us to deliver the best possible designs.
