Award Success at the MEP Middle East Awards 2016

Black & White Engineering came first in two categories, winning Electrical Project of the Year (Khazna Data Centres) and Project Manager of the Year with Jean-Pierre Hamel.

Project Manager of the Year –  Jean-Pierre Hamel

J.P. (as he is known to his friends and colleagues) joined Black and White Engineering over a year ago. Initially, his mission was to manage site supervision and to monitor implementation of the company’s existing procedures. After a detailed audit of the existing system, he proposed a complete overhaul to focus on simple but operational project management oriented procedures, which runs the core company business.

Through this project implementation J.P. established a comprehensive integrated management system within a year, including quality, health and safety and environmental management. This global system is now operational and implemented globally in all other company offices.

J.P. impressed the judges with his attention to detail and hands-on approach.

He demonstrably uses the developed processes to mitigate time and prove beneficial to the project and client needs. Further training in QMS methodology has enhanced these inherent skills,” said one judge.

Electrical Project of the Year – Khazna Data Centres

Black & White also won this year’s Electrical Project of the Year with Khazna Data Centres.

The Khazna Data Centres project consists of two (nearly identical) double storey buildings; one located in Abu Dhabi and the other in Meydan, Dubai.

The new 1000m² data halls and associated plant/systems were integrated in to existing live data centres which required numerous reviews, method statements and ongoing risk assessments.

Black & White Engineering’s design consisted of the following elements: single point of failure check of the total system, risk analysis plus cause and effect diagrams/matrix, detailed sequence of operations on power, protection device coordination studies, PUE (power utilisation efficiency) calculations, complete Amtech/Dialux calculations including all tie-ins to existing data hall systems, specifications, layouts, details, schematics, schedules, and coordinated BIM/Revit models.

Judges said the project was a clear winner and met almost all the elements they were looking for.

On receiving the award, technical director Alistair Davis said: “It is obviously a great honour to be recognised with this award. In the last few months things have been a little quiet in the market but there a lot of opportunities out there. What it needs is for a business to be flexible and at Black and White we are open to everything. Finding the right projects is the best way to keep a team motivated and with Dubai Expo 2020 there is certainly a light at the end of the tunnel. It’s not just about Dubai at all. It is an event which will be of great benefit for the UAE as a whole and will show that, in the long term, there is the prospect of many great projects which companies can be a part of.

Congratulations to J.P., Alistair and everyone who worked on the Khazna Data Centre project. Well done also to all our nominees and finalists for their excellent work.

The MEP Middle East Awards 2017 will take place in Dubai on November 8.
